The gift of flowers has always been an integral part of any romance or love affair. Lovers through the ages have expressed their feelings through the giving and receiving of flowers. These days the rose is seen as the flower of love, but as we will explore this has not always been the case, and modern lovers are novices in the game of expressing their feelings with flowers.

In the early 18th century the selam or “Persian love letter” was introduced to Europe. A selam was a bouquet of flowers with specific meanings that were combined to form coded messages. The wife of the British ambassador to Constantinople Lady Mary Wortley Montague introduced the selam to Britain on her return in 1718. She was the first to state that every flower has a meaning and was quoted as saying “one is able to reproach, quarrel or send letters of friendship, passion, or civility or even of news, without ever inking your fingers.”

These coded messages became extremely fashionable during Victorian times, and even more complex. The color presentation and position in the bouquet of flowers (even when the type of flower was the same) all had specific and individual meanings. Even the presentation of a single bloom could have two meanings, one if presented head first and an opposite meaning if presented stem first.

If you want to try your hand at composing a floral love letter there are numerous books and web sites that list the meanings of specific flowers. (Be careful though as some flowers have different modern and old fashioned meanings.) With a little research you can even send flowers that represent specific months and days so it would be possible to spell out a birthday, other special date or anniversary with flowers!
